Seven years in, Susan’s behind-the-scenes support is one of the driving forces behind how Upside runs.
Since joining Upside in June 2019, Susan Shaffer, Executive Assistant to the CEO, has grown her role to encompass events and projects of every size — bringing structure to complex work while leaving plenty of room for creativity along the way.
Q: You started at Upside back in June 2019 — how has your role evolved, and what do you think makes you unique on the team?
Susan: I think what makes me unique is my ability to bring structure to complex work while making room for creativity. I started at Upside as an executive assistant and office manager, and my role has expanded to include managing events and projects of all sizes. I love taking an idea, turning it into a plan, and creating an experience that makes people feel engaged and included.
Q: Which of Upside's values do you connect with the most?
Susan: The value I connect with the most is Make the Impact Worth the Effort. I try to make every interaction and process as smooth and thoughtful as possible so that our leaders and teams can focus on what they do best — run the business with speed, precision, and purpose. To me, the real impact comes from turning behind-the-scenes support into greater focus and momentum across the company.
Q: What was your first job, and did it teach you anything you still use today?
Susan: My first job was a lifeguard and golf range ball picker. It was my summer job from high school through college, and I loved being outdoors all summer. Lifeguarding taught me the skill of staying a step ahead as a young adult — to anticipate what might happen next. Funny how that skill comes in handy at Upside, but without the whistles!
Q: What are your hobbies outside of work?
Susan: I've been a lifelong distance runner. Even though I have a competitive nature, I don't keep stats or measure split times — I run for the pure joy of running. I push myself at times and other times I just enjoy the moment. Several years ago I ran the Marine Corps 10K race and stopped mid-run to take pictures of the scenery.
Q: What has inspired you, and why?
Susan: I've been an advisory board member of an organization whose mission is to promote plastic-free and sustainable living. The nonprofit raises funds for local environmental and animal welfare education through an annual dog walk. I've been able to support a mission I love while hanging out with dogs! Being part of the organization has inspired me to treat the earth a little more kindly.
A quote I try to live by: "A beautiful life is one that protects the oceans and the lands, chooses kindness over convenience, and always stops to pet the dog."
